John Stewart Bell: A Great Belfast Physicist of our Time

Saturday 17 February, 2:15 pm - 3:15 pm

Suitability: 18+

Born and educated in Belfast, John Stewart Bell FRS (1928-1990) was one of the most original theoretical physicists of recent times. Working on a range of topics across quantum mechanics, particle physics and relativity, Bell asked profound questions and made lasting contributions. Recognition has grown since his death, and the lecture will take place just across the street from ‘John Bell House’, the former Technical College. It will be given by Professor Andrew Whitaker of Queen’s University, the leading expert on Bell’s life and work and his biographer. Although Bell’s work may seem challenging to the nonspecialist, the lecture will be of general interest, covering Bell’s life and an outline appreciation of his achievements.
